Description

The Shravana (ear) lunar mansion has a somewhat confusing symbolism as its first symbol, the ear that listens to every bit of knowledge and to the hearts of others, doesn’t mesh at first with the second symbol, the three steps of journeys and progress. The same problem occurs with the two deities of this mansion, the first being Vishnu the preserver of the universe while the second, Saraswati, is the goddess of wisdom, knowledge and skill and often acts as a muse that inspires both poetry and invention.

Unlike Vishakha, whose dual symbolism indicates a split, in Shravana it represents elements which are complementary. In the mythological story, all of the avatars of Vishnu were either animals or skilled warriors who killed their opponents, aside from the one in which he took the form of a beggar dwarf named Trivicrama. Unlike the rest of Vishnu’s opponents, the demon Bali who conquered the world was a fair, just and generous ruler who didn’t deserve to die. Hence instead of killing him, Vishnu came to him as a Brahmin (priestly) dwarf with the request that Bali grant him three steps worth of soil as alms. The demon who was known for his generosity promptly agreed offering even more, at which point the dwarf became a giant whose steps covered the entire world.

Famous people with Shravana prominent in their charts: Mozart (Sun, Mercury and Saturn), George Clooney (Moon and Jupiter), Thomas Jefferson and Carolus Linnaeus (Moon), Washington and Franklin (Mercury), Larry King (Saturn), Hugh Hefner (Mars), Chuck Norris (Venus), Eisenhower and Princess Diana (Jupiter), De Gaulle (Mars and Jupiter), Julian Assange (Rahu) and Charles Manson (Rahu and Moon).
